What is endodontic retreatment?

To understand endodontic retreatment it helps to also read the background on endodontic treatment.

Your endodontist will recommend endodontic treatment (root canal therapy) if they feel it is the best option for you. There are, however, no guarantees that any surgical procedure will achieve the desired outcome. Your endodontist will discuss the chances of success so you can make an informed decision.

Due to a variety of reasons including narrow or curved canals, new trauma, or a damaged restoration, your tooth may not heal properly. If infection or discomfort returns another endodontic procedure (or endodontic retreatment) may provide a second chance to save your tooth. Your endodontist will:
  1. remove prior restorations from your original treatment
  2. remove the root canal filling material
  3. clean and shape your root canals
  4. re-fill the root canals with biocompatible material
  5. seal your tooth and place a new restoration (crown)
If your original treatment was not successful due to a crack or narrow or curved root canal that went undetected, your endodontist may also utilize endodontic surgery. Based on your unique case, your endodontist will make a recommendation on the appropriate treatment.
